Ronny Chieng
was born 21/11/1985. Chieng is currently a Senior Correspondent for The Daily
Show, Comedy Central. He is also the creator and actor of the sitcom Ronny
Chieng International Student. The show premiered on ABC Australia as well as
Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born to a Malaysian Chinese couple in
Johor Bahru (Malaysia). Chieng was raised in Singapore and the United States.
He lived in Manchester, New Hampshire, from 1989 to 1994. Chieng was a performer
at a comedy festival that took place in Melbourne, Australia in 2013 together
with Trevor Noah. A few years later Chieng was asked to audition for the
correspondent role on The Daily Show, which Noah hosts. He was named one the
top 10 comics to watch in Variety's July 2016 issue. In October 2016, Chieng
joined The Daily Show to discuss the controversy surrounding a Jesse Watters
Fox News segment that was widely viewed as racist. Chieng presented an
expletive-laden critique of the conservative network's segment. He also
revisited the city's Chinatown and Chinatown, where Watters have mocked the
residents and conducted interviews more respectfully with residents in Mandarin
and Cantonese. The viral video was featured by the Washington Post, Slate, and
other media publications. Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout during his youth.
Chieng hasn't managed to obtain citizenship or permanent residency status in
Australia despite living in Australia for 10 years. Chieng joked in 2018 that
there was a phobia of cynophobia, however, he later said that he was completely
unafraid of dogs.
